Frank Buttgereit

Professor Dr Frank Buttgereit is a Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the Charit Campus Mitte University Medicine in Berlin He also directs a liaison research group at the Deutsche RheumaForschungszentrumHe studied Medicine at the Humboldt University Berlin Charit became Associate ProfessorSenior Registrar in 1997 and has held the position of Professor of Rheumatology at the Charit since 2002 He has been Deputy Director since 2007 and since 2012 he also holds honorary professor for rheumatology at the Rosario University of Bogota Colombia In 2024 he was appointed to a professorship for Rheumatological Osteology at the Charit Dr Buttgereit has expertise in the treatment of a wide variety of inflammatory rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases including rheumatoid arthritis connective tissue diseases and different forms of vasculitis and osteoporosis He is internationally recognized for his work in the field of glucocorticoid therapy including research and development of novel glucocorticoid receptor ligands immunometabolism and the development of 3D cell culture models as a replacement for animal testing in accordance with the 3R principles He has been principal investigator in a variety of clinical studies on effects of antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory agents in patients with inflammatory rheumatic musculoskeletal diseasesDr Buttgereit has been the recipient of research awards in 1988 Humboldt price and 2002 Schuler award and has received scholarships in 1990 Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation 199294 and 1996 DAAD and a BIH Clinical Fellowship 2017 2023 He was or is currently on the editorial board of several journals including Ann Rheum Dis Rheumatology Arthritis Research Therapy Z Rheumatol and Inflammopharmacology and author of more than 430 publications httpspubmedncbinlmnihgovtermButtgereit2CFsortdatesize10
