Dr Michael Tee

Michael L. Tee, MD, is a rheumatologist and academic leader who serves as Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila, the national health sciences center. A clinician-scientist, he is regarded as one of the country’s foremost contributors to genetics research in rheumatology, with work focused on elucidating the genetic and immunologic underpinnings of systemic lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune rheumatic diseases. His research integrates molecular genetics, epidemiology, and outcomes science to better understand ethnic susceptibility, disease expression, and treatment response among Asian populations.
Dr. Tee is also a member of the Asia Pacific Lupus Collaboration (APLC), advancing multicenter studies, harmonized regional data platforms, and context-responsive recommendations for lupus care. Through sustained collaboration, he is strengthening research capacity and is fostering cross-border partnerships addressing disparities in diagnosis and access to therapy.
His scholarship bridges bench, bedside, and policy—advocating precision medicine, equitable access to immunomodulatory treatments, and evidence-informed strategies to improve the lives of patients with rheumatic diseases.
