Dr. Kornelis van der Geest is a rheumatologist and researcher at the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology of the University Medical Center Groningen (the Netherlands). His research focuses on 1) improving diagnostic methods for giant cell arteritis (GCA) and polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and 2) understanding the underlying mechanisms of these diseases. Dr. van der Geest developed standardized scores to quantify inflammation in GCA and PMR using ultrasonography and PET/CT. Through his translational immunology work, he has identified new therapeutic targets in these conditions, paving the way for targeted treatment trials. As co-chair of the EULAR Study Group for PMR/GCA and a board member of the Dutch Society of Rheumatology’s imaging work group (IRON), Dr. van der Geest is committed to advancing both international and national research collaborations.
