Isao Matsumoto

Isao Matsumoto, M.D. is Professor and Director of Department of Rheumatology, University of Tsukuba, Japan. His major research has focused on basic, translational research of the mechanisms and regulation of inflammatory cascades in autoimmunity, especially in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). He found arthritogenic target of arthritis model at IGBMC (France), and subsequentially revealed the mechanisms of autoantibody-mediated arthritis at Harvard University and Tsukuba. He has identified key pathways via several biomarkers, inflammatory regulator, ageing and metabolisms in RA.
Professor Matsumoto’s scientific work has been honored with several awards, including the 2011 Novartis Prize for Rheumatology, and the 2017 Prize from Japan College of Rheumatology. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers.
